I have Win98SE running in VMware Player 6. I enabled the sound options in the VM, set the correct host device, installed the Win98 SoundBlaser PCI driver recommended for VMware, SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe, and the associated devices are listed in Device Manger without any issues, but there's still no 'playback' devices listed in the multimedia control panel. I recorded a fresh boot.log and the sound driver is reported as 'Loaded' and 'Enumerated'. I've uninstalled the driver, reboot, reinstalled, and rebooted again, but still no 'playback' devices and of course no sound. Everything else seems to be running as well as to be expected--not all of VMware's features are available in Win98.
Others have reported that they could get sound working with this version of VMware, but I'm not having any luck. As you can tell, I'm no n00b, but it's been awhile since I've messed around with Win98 and might have overlooked something. Any suggestions?
EDIT:
Ops, forgot to mention that the host OS is Win7 home 64bit.

By default, even after installing the VMWare Tools provided by VMWare (Player, Workstation or Server), the VMWare Tools package still does not install an audio driver, even though it installed a mouse driver and a SVGA driver for true colour graphics.
